What ARAS Does
How ARAS Advocates
ARAS provides advocacy assistance to older people or their representatives who are
- Receiving aged care services in the community
- Being assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team
- Applying for or are receiving
- Carer Allowance or
- A Community Aged Care Package
- Living, or about to live, in a residential facility or,
- At risk of, or are, being abused,
ARAS can provide:
- Information about the rights and responsibilities of older people
- Support to older people and their representatives:
- to be involved in decision making about their quality of care and quality of life
- to raise and pursue their concerns or issues
- to participate in providing feedback about their level of satisfaction with the services they receive
- to participate in consumer/resident groups
- Assistance to older people or their representatives to speak for themselves or represent them on request.
- Strategies to assist older people to safeguard themselves
- Information and education sessions about rights and responsibilities and the role of ARAS
- Assistance with policy enhancement or development to ensure that consumer rights are upheld
Your Rights
As well as having the same rights as every other member of the community, in aged care you specifically have the right to:
- maintain personal independence
- be treated with dignity and respect
- live without exploitation, abuse or neglect
- be and feel safe
- be provided with information
- personal privacy
- make decisions and to have choices
- complain
- confidentiality
- be consulted
- involve an advocate to support you or to speak on your behalf
- access and control over your own money
ARAS offers a free, confidential and independent service.
We can arrange to visit you in your home or by appointment in
our offices.
