How To Advocate For Yourself
or Others
An important aspect of the assistance provided by ARAS is advising and
preparing people to self-advocate i.e. to speak on their own behalf in
order to gain information, access services, change their services to better
meet their needs and to generally stay in control of and self-manage their
support. This Fact sheet is a practical guide for self advocacy.
Participation
in Decision Making
in Residential Care - Developed by ARAS, these guidelines will help
to ensure that representatives and family are able to participate in the
making of decisions with regard to their family members etc. especially
if they have dementia.
A Question of Quality
Booklet
Aimed at older people and their representatives this booklet provides
information about the rights of consumers of services funded by the Home
and Community Care Program. It provides a series of questions relating
to consumer rights that consumers can ask of their service provider, to
get a clearer picture of what rights mean in a practical sense.
Abuse Prevention
Program - outlines the rights of older people and describes
what happens if an older person or their representative contacts an advocate
from the Abuse Prevention Program.
Risk factors and the Effect of
Abuse - lists the various forms of abuse and describes the risk factors
that can contribute to the abuse of older people. the subsequent possible
effects of an abusive situation on the older person are also briefly highlighted.
How Service Providers Can Assist
Older People - includes details on the Principles of Assistance for
service providers when abuse is suspected and the support the older person
can expect when abuse is present.
Alliance for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (APEA) Information
The brochure Safeguarding your Finances is No. 1 in a series of 5 to assist you in safeguarding your finances and describes what financial abuse is and outlines several examples. Information about how you can build safeguards into financial arrangements is provided along with what they are, when you might use them and why. Also included is a list of agencies that make up the Alliance (APEA), each describing what they offer and their contact details..
Regaining Your Control Booklet
This award winning booklet is the result of a collaborative venture between
Aged Rights Advocacy Service, Helping Hand Aged Care and Department of
Veteran Affairs along with a reference group of older people from metropolitan
Adelaide.
It includes information about the types and signs of abuse, some myths
and facts, barriers to getting help and what can be done to prevent abuse
and remain in control. A comprehensive list of service providers offering
support and advice is also included in the back of the booklet.
