Abuse prevention
ARAS provides free, independent and confidential information and advocacy support to older people who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, abuse.
The service supports older people aged 65 years and over, or 50 years and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, where abuse is occurring within a relationship of trust.
Abuse of an older person may include:
- physical abuse;
- psychological or emotional abuse;
- financial abuse;
- sexual abuse;
- neglect;
- social abuse;
- coercive or controlling behaviour; and
- other behaviours that cause harm or distress within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust.
ARAS provides rights-based and person-centred information and advocacy. The older person's rights, voice, wishes, preferences and safety remain central to the support provided.
Rights and Safety
Older people have the same human and legal rights as everyone else, including the right to be treated with dignity and respect, make their own decisions and live free from abuse, neglect and violence.
Where relevant to aged care, the Aged Care Act 2024 Statement of Rights also recognises these rights and supports older people to exercise choice and make decisions about their lives and care.
ARAS provides information and advocacy that is inclusive and responsive to each older person's individual identity, culture, background, circumstances and lived experience.
United Nations Principles for Older Persons
In supporting older people to uphold and safeguard their rights, ARAS recognises the United Nations Principles for Older Persons (1991). The Principles are grouped under five key areas:
Independence
Older people should have access to basic needs, health care, education and appropriate supports, be able to live in safe environments, and remain living at home for as long as possible.
Participation
Older people should remain involved in society and have opportunities to participate in their communities and share their knowledge and skills.
Care
Older people should have access to appropriate care and support that protects their wellbeing, dignity, autonomy and quality of life.
Self-fulfilment
Older people should have opportunities to develop their potential and access educational, cultural, spiritual and recreational opportunities.
Dignity
Older people should be able to live in dignity and security and be free from exploitation and physical or mental abuse. They should be treated fairly regardless of their circumstances.
There Is No Excuse for Abuse
